Why Meta (Facebook) Ads Spends Over Your Daily Budget

If you set a daily budget (e.g., $10/day) and notice Facebook spending $12, $15, or even $17.50 in a single day, this is not an error—it is an intentional feature of Meta’s delivery algorithm.

1. Daily Budget is an "Average", Not a Hard Ceiling

Meta treats your daily budget as a target average, not a fixed daily cap. Under Meta’s advertising policy, their algorithm is permitted to spend up to 75% above your daily budget on any single day (spending up to 175% of your target) if their system detects a sudden surge in high-opportunity traffic or conversion potential.

2. The 7-Day Balancing Rule

Meta balances this out over a rolling 7-day period:

Maximum Weekly Spend = 7 x Daily Budget

If Meta spends 150% of your budget on Monday because performance is strong, it will automatically scale back delivery and spend less on slower days later in the week so your 7-day total does not exceed your limit.

3. How to Stop Facebook from Overspending

If unpredictable daily fluctuations hurt your cash flow, use these methods to enforce strict limits:

Method A: Set an Account Spending Limit (Hard Cap)

Go to Ads Manager > All Tools > Billing & Payments > Payment Settings.
Under Account Spending Limit, click Set Limit.

Enter a maximum figure. Once your entire ad account reaches this exact number, Meta will automatically pause all active ads until you reset or adjust it.

Method B: Switch to Lifetime Budgets

If you set a campaign with a start date and an end date, switch from a Daily Budget to a Lifetime Budget. Meta guarantees it will never exceed your total lifetime budget across that campaign's schedule.

Method C: Create an Automated Rule to Turn Ads Off

In Ads Manager, click Rules > Create a new rule.
Set the condition: If "Spent" today > [Your exact maximum amount], then "Turn off campaign".
This automatically halts delivery the moment your specific dollar threshold is reached on that calendar day.
